In this story, Amy (aged 6) receives magical help from the amazing little sleep doctors and their helper, Lionel.
The story was written by an educational and child psychologist, with more than 40 years’ experience of working with many children with such difficulties, and was created together with, and advised by his grandchildren, Jessica (6) and Bertie (10).
The book was written during the COVID-19 pandemic when so many children experienced anxiety issues, and we hope that this book will be of help to them. The book also includes some tips and ideas for parents.
We hope that the story will be fun and interesting for all young children. However, the book may also be used as part of an existing programme to help childrenwith sleep or anxiety difficulties. It is an addition to, not a substitute for, such interventions.
The story is intended to take the child’s mind away from negative thinking
and to help them focus on wellness, and the positive aspects of our body’s strength and resilience, and the importance of sleep.

The Amazing World of Little Sleep Doctors is a delightful book for all young children, and especially helpful for those with anxiety and sleep problems. The story is engaging, beautifully written and illustrated, and translates scientific knowledge into a wonderful story that can be shared with children at bedtime. The advice for parents and carers about how the book can be used to support an intervention for children that tend to worry and struggle with sleep makes it essential reading that can be used as part of a comprehensive, evidence-based package of support. I would strongly recommend it!

It is not often we find a book whose authors are a distinguished educational and child psychologist with nearly half a century of experience plus a six year old and a 10 year old – but here it makes for a great combination. Some of life’s hardest problems can be helped in the simplest ways, and The Amazing World of the Little Sleep Doctors takes the troublesome issues of sleep and anxiety and turns the evidence base into something which will be fun for young children and helpful to parents.

What a reassuring and delightful story! The sleep doctor team members are working hard through the night to remove worries, and all this happens when a child drops off to sleep. This engaging and often humorous explanation is why yesterday’s doubts and anxieties will often be much smaller when the child awakes the next morning.
One lovable character, Lionel, is likely to be viewed by all children as a star, and particularly an anxious or unconfident child can relate to this member of the team. Although sometimes, Lionel may make mistakes and get some things wrong, the other sleep doctor members hold him in considerable valued and respect: after all, in the story he had one of the biggest and most important tasks to carry out. This story of the amazing world of the little sleep doctors is comforting and calming and can be slowly read to an anxious child, because the sleep doctors are very careful and take quite a long time to carry out their essential work. |

This very charming children’s book is a product of the pandemic lockdowns. Professor Gersch and his grandchildren Bertie (10) and Jessica (6) have produced a joint effort, bringing together a very practical application of sound psychological principles, and a fantasy story aimed to promote positive sleep patterns in children.
This is a well-illustrated and engaging story inspired by the fantasies of a 6 and a 10 year old. Their own illustrations highlight the well-masked anxieties during the pandemic, especially the age-old issues of sleep. Above all, it’s a fun children’s book to read! |

The Amazing World of the Little Sleep Doctors is a delightful therapeutic story that has been written by an experienced child and educational psychologist, ably supported by his grandchildren. The narrative is developed and informed by psychological insights and will help children to understand the importance of sleep and its healing effects. It also provides ideas for the management of common anxieties that children might experience. I loved the idea of washing worries away overnight, and this fits very well with therapeutic techniques used by psychologists. The particular strength of this book is the guidance for parents, who could use these insights to respond to their child’s sleep difficulties and anxieties. It will be a valuable aid to support and reinforce wider interventions.

Children (and some adults) can struggle with change especially when the change is forced upon us. This book was inspired by the pandemic so it’s a great example of how a negative unanticipated event such as a pandemic can be transformed into a positive opportunity to cultivate children’s well-being. Professor Irvine Gersch enjoys a well-deserved reputation for excellence among educational psychologists. Drawing on his knowledge of Psychology and his professional experience of working with children, Professor Gersch co-wrote this book with Bertie & Jessica Caplan, his grandchildren.
Sometimes adults imagine that it is best not to discuss sensitive topics such as anxieties with children, for fear of upsetting the children. Other adults may be inclined to dismiss children’s fears as not deserving attention especially when the fears are imaginary in nature. However, children need to have their fears acknowledged and discussed in a calm and re-assuring manner. This book with its interesting story provides adults with a simple way of discussing complex yet important issues with children. The book has beautiful illustrations that may enable young children to participate in the discussion. Professor Gersch rightly points out that the book is designed to complement rather than replace existing intervention programmes designed to help children cope with sleep and other anxieties. Importantly, Professor Gersch highlights for parents and carers, key aspects of the recommended approach. The guidance provided is both invaluable and practical. |
